THE HEART of a GOLFER

Last March I was shopping in a used bookstore in Decatur, GA and came upon an autographed book by PGA Professional Wally Armstrong.  I was totally intrigued with how Mr. Armstrong took the many aspects of the game of golf and related them to the way he lives his every day life.  It has brought a whole new meaning to how I look at this beloved game.  Each week this season, I hope to share with you some of Armstrong’s timeless lessons and truths about golf and life.
We have all experienced almost every human emotion imaginable during a round of golf.  One minute you can be exhilarated by a well placed shot thinking “this is an easy game” and the next moment your ball looks like a fried egg sitting up close to the lip of a deep bunker and you’re now wondering “how am I going to get myself out of this mess.”
We know that the game of golf can bring out the best and worst in all of us.  Day after day golf brings each of us face to face with ourselves and our true character.  How do you “approach” every shot?:
Do you play to your strengths or let your weaknesses dominate your “game”?
Do you have an attitude of gratitude while you are playing or do you complain throughout your “round”?
Are you courteous to your fellow “golfers” or do you try to “psyche them out” to get an advantage?
If you have a bad “hole”, do you carry it with you or “do you leave it right there on the fringe and start fresh?”
Do you stay involved in your own “game” or get caught up in watching someone else play?
Do you worry about the skills you don’t have or do depend on the ones you do have?
Do you whine about your “game” or do you keep your failures and successes to yourself?
Do you take your “game” too seriously or are you able to laugh at your mistakes?
What lessons about golf and life have you learned over the years while spending time on the links?  Care to share? As we spend the next few weeks hoping for an early spring, let’s all take this time to reflect on what kind of a heart we will bring to the game when we return.
Happy New Year
RICK’S CORNER
“FOOD for THOUGHT”

What is the fastest and easiest way to improve your golf game?  The answer is simple.  If we watch the Pro’s in their tournament competition one outstanding characteristic stands out.  They have a fully developed pre-shot routine.  Included in this routine are the three basic fundamentals of the game:  GRIP – POSTURE and ALIGNMENT to the TARGET.
Time spent, even if it is 10 minutes a day during the off season, working on putting your hands on the club so they are working together, developing a feel for good posture and practicing aligning the club face to a target with the body being parallel left or right, depending on which side you swing from, will do wonders and help you to develop a more repeatable pre-shot routine.
See you in the Spring.    Rick
First Tee of N.H.

NLGC will once again be an affiliate of The First Tee of NH.  Tina has also become an Associate Member of The First Tee of NH Board of Directors.  Their mission is to positively impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.
The First Tee of NH promotes and reinforces the Core Values of The First Tee:  Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy, and Judgment.  The First Tee delivers its programs in partnership with golf facilities and schools throughout the state.  By June of 2008, they will have introduced The First Tee Life Skill and Core Values program to over 10,000 children in 30 New Hampshire schools.  In November of 2007, Rick attended a First Tee training program along with the Manchester School System Physical Education Teachers and other golf professionals from the area.
The First Tee in partnership with Wentworth By The Sea Country Club has been selected to host the national qualifying event for the 2008 Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.  The event brings 40+ First Tee Participants from around the country as well as 5 international locations to New Hampshire next July, to test not only their golf skills, but also Life Skills and Core Values learned during their involvement in The First Tee.
Volunteers and financial support is needed.  For more information visit their website at::www.TheFirstTeeNH.org or contact them at info@TheFirstTeeNH.org or 603.964.3033.

GOLF SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
MATT DAILEY of Dover was our 2007 JUNIOR GOLF SCHOLARSHIP WINNER.  Thirteen area students subitted applications and Matt’s essay about Integrity and Sportsmanship was chosen.  He wrote, “integrity is to be true to yourself and others.  In golf this means that you don’t cheat because you only cheat yourself…It is important for people to see that kids can be honest and responsible while playing the game of golf.”  He went on to say “Sportsmanship basically means to “play well with others.”  Jacob Allen of Rochester was awarded Honorable Mention and a $75 gift certificate to Rick Rogers Golf Camp.

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP UPDATE
Our Junior Membership is growing.  In hopes of promoting character development and live-enhancing values along with teaching our juniors golf rules and organizational skills, we would like to start a Junior League.  In order to do this NLGC needs YOUR HELP.  We are looking for volunteers to assist our Juniors in running their own league.  Please contact us as soon as possible via email or phone to let us know if your child would like to participate in the league AND if you would be willing to help.
Once again the NHGA and the NHWGA will be offering children up to 18 years of age a complimentary GHIN.  We strongly suggest that your child take advantage of this opportunity to establish a handicap.  The use of handicaps during any golf competition is a vital part of fairness to fellow golfers.
JUNIOR GOLF SCHOLARSHIP
NLGC will once again be offering a Single Junior Membership to a student entering grades 6 – 12 in the fall of 2008.  Please see the enclosed application for details.
BINGO AT ITS BEST
The Annual Fall Social was once again a big hit.  Everyone enjoyed a turkey dinner and then Bingo Babe Vicky, dressed in pink taffeta, entertained us with her BINGO humor.  Awards were presented to the Club Championship winners between games and the laughs were abundant throughout the night.
We are looking for new ideas for this year’s Fall Social.
Do you have any ones you’d like to share?
