News Release
June 16, 2006

On Sunday, June 11th, Nippo Lake Golf Club held their 6th Annual Take a Child to the Course Afternoon.  Blake Janelle of Madbury, winner of the 2006 Junior Golf Membership, was presented with a Certificate of Accomplishment for his essay on how through perseverance, one can be rewarded both on and off the golf course.  Blake spoke about the need for respect for ones opponents “…but first and foremost, a golfer needs respect for the game.”  Blake will be a senior at Oyster River High School in the fall.  16 area students submitted essays and Dawn Welsh, Managing Member of AMP Media Group in Glastonbury, CT, chose the winning essay.

Celebrating a rain free day, 102 children, ranging from the ages of 2 to17 years participated in the Take a Child to the Course.  Each child received a plaque commemorating the event along with merchandise donated by Nippo Lake Golf Club, Hilltop Fun Center of Somersworth, Seacoast Coca Cola, Gymnastics at Brentwood Commons, FUNSPOT of Laconia, and Erica’s Place in Barrington.  A barbecue hosted by The Chip ‘n Run Pub & Grill was available to all with food and drinks donated by The Chip ‘n Run, Hannaford of Northwood, and Seacoast Coca-Cola. The children enjoyed mouthwatering “goodies” made by Pat Brideau of Barrington and ice cream donated by Frisbie Memorial Hospital.

The nine-hole event featured activities by age group using forward tees.  Instructions were available on the driving range by Professional Teacher Rick Rogers and Dennis Harriman, Jr. and on the practice putting green by Scott Rowell and David Powers, Jr., prior to tee off.  Audra Cyr and Wendy Ring greeted the golfers on the 1st tee with last minute details for an enjoyable round.  Nancy Mason was the course photographer while Tamera Harriman focused on capturing many heartwarming moments on the putting green and driving range.  Longest drive in the fairway for the 7 and under group went to Connor Edgerly of Strafford and Ryan Whitcher of Strafford won longest putt with a putt of 12 feet 6 inches.  Steven Watson of Barrington won the longest drive for the 8-11 age group and longest putt honors went to Brandon Coles of Rochester with a three foot 5 inch putt.  Andrew Sullivan of Rochester won longest drive for the 12-17 age group and Matt Preston of Barrington took longest putt after he sank a 13 foot 3 inch shot.  Each child was awarded a custom-made age appropriate driver or putter donated by Al’s Golf of Rochester.

A special thanks to the staff and membership of Nippo Lake Golf Club for helping to make this event such a huge success.
